All-terrain tires are one of the most capable and versatile shoes you can get for your truck or SUV. If mud tires are a bit too extreme and you want a set of rubber that won’t give you backaches on paved streets, the Kumho Road Venture AT51 is a solid and sterling choice.

The trouble with AT (all-terrain) tires is wear. Most of the AT tire I tried were supremely capable on soft and muddy terrain. However, they were terrible on the highway. The tires were not only loud, but the tires have a tendency to wear faster over paved roads.

This is the reason why I’m not overly fond of all-terrain tires. But with the proliferation of hybrid tires, you can now get a new set of rugged tires that can also perform admirably on the highway. In this regard, the Kumho Road Venture AT51 will make you a believer.

What vehicles are perfect for the Kumho Road Venture AT51?

Don’t let the supremely rugged design of the Kumho Road Venture AT51 fool you. It may look like a proper set of mud tires with angled chamfer grooves and deeper tapered shoulder blocks, but it scores high in highway comfort and refinement. This makes this tire ideal for a wide array of domestic and import vehicles such as the Toyota Tundra, Jeep Wrangler, Hummer H2 & H3, Ford F-150, RAM 1500, and Chevrolet Colorado.

Most new trucks and SUVs are equipped with HT or highway-terrain tires from the factory. HT tires are great for everyday driving and long highway jaunts. However, those tires are ill-equipped to handle rougher terrain. The Kumho Road Venture AT51 offers an ideal solution without disrupting the NVH levels in your truck or SUV. When the road turns to mush, you can simply keep driving without losing traction and grip.

Kumho Road Venture At51 Review

What are the features of the Kumho Road Venture AT51?

This tire is engineered to offer class-leading performance over muddy or snowy terrain. Those aggressively angled chamfers offer the necessary biting edges to propel your vehicle on any sort of rugged terrain, be it loose tarmac, sand, mud, ice, and snow.

The rugged appearance of the Kumho Road Venture AT51 is enhanced by the deep and tapered shoulder blocks that extends to the sidewall of the tires. This design enables the tire to offer added grip even if the tires are purposely deflated, which is the usual procedure when driving over sand or loose mud. It also improves the self-cleaning properties of the tire.

The Kumho Road Venture AT51 is designed with deep central grooves to quickly expel water from the face of the tread. It comes with a symmetric tread design and variable-pitch tread blocks to deliver a silent and smooth ride.

It is constructed from a dual silicone compound. The formula is meant to deliver longer wear and excellent all-season traction.

How do the tires behave on snowy and muddy roads?

The Kumho Road Venture AT51 offers excellent and stable performance over muddy and snowy roads. The amounts of grip are relentless and the tires offer superior control over loose terrain. But if you’re planning to drive your truck or SUV like a snow plough over deep snow, you might be disappointed. There are limits to what an all-terrain tire can do. In most occasions, only mud tires can motivate your vehicle to propel forward without encountering any problems.

But for winter driving and mild to moderate off-roading, it is really hard to fault the Kumho Road Venture AT51.

How about on smooth roads and highways?

While off-road performance is definitely impressive, the on-road manners of the Kumho Road Venture AT51 are something to write about. I was visibly impressed on how the tires felt when driven at speed. It really felt like a proper set of HT tires. The ride is smooth, comfortable, and relatively quiet.

However, don’t be fooled about the ride silence of the Kumho Road Venture AT51. Yes, the tires are capable of delivering refined silence at low and moderate speeds. But tire roar will be more evident as you speed up on the highway.

Still, it’s not as bad as all-terrain tires from previous generations. Most of the time, the road noise will also have something to do with the NVH tuning of your ride.

Does it offer superior all-season performance?

Yes. In terms of all-season performance in both wet and dry driving, the Kumho Road Venture AT51 is capable enough to battle it out with more expensive tire brands. Sporty driving will not exactly merit a smallish grin as the tires doesn’t offer the grip levels of a high-performance tire, but it does offer superior traction and stability on wet roads.

This tire shines the most when the roads turn to mush. If you live in places with moderate to heavy winters, or if you want to equip your truck/SUV with a tire that can handle loose gravel and mud, take a closer look at the Kumho Road Venture AT51.

Should I buy the Kumho Road Venture AT51?

The answer is a big YES, especially if you consider the price. Kumho tires are known to offer terrific value, and the same can be said for the Road Venture AT51. If you compare the price of this tire with similar AT tires from Bridgestone or Michelin, you’ll be hard-pressed to believe how Kumho was able to pull it off despite the on-road and off-road brilliance of the Road Venture AT51.

However, the overly aggressive design of the tire may not be for everyone, but that’s just me. In truth, the Kumho Road Venture AT51 will actually improve the rugged and go-anywhere styling of your SUV or pickup truck. But for people who want a more subdued design, this tire may not be the right choice.

But if you consider the price, it’s hard to say no to this tire. Kumho has a clear winner with the Road Venture AT51.
