Best Dodge Ram 2500 Tires: Buyer’s Guide

1. How to Recognize Truck Tires?

The RAM 2500 is a heavy-duty truck meant for towing and hauling heavy items. That’s why it is important to choose tires that are also heavy-duty.

When choosing tires for your truck, you first need to make sure that the dimensions are the same as your existing tires. In other words, if the tires on your truck are 285/70R17, you should get a set of tires with the same dimensions. Going for wider or taller will result in worse driving dynamics, more fuel consumption, and reduced performance.

That said, when it comes to heavy-duty trucks such as the RAM 2500, other things are equally important. For this truck, you should only be looking for LT-metric (Light Truck) size tires.

These tires are made precisely for vehicles such as the RAM 2500. They work great when a trailer is attached, or there is heavy cargo in the bed. Look for the LT designation before the dimensions of the tire (e.g., LT285/70R17).

P-metric tires, on the other hand, are designed only for passenger SUVs and trucks. They don’t have stiff sidewalls and aren’t able to withstand the weight and pressure of heavy loads.

Finally, it is strongly recommended that you choose the right load range rating for your needs. The load range of the tire should be sufficient for the weight that you’ll put on the truck.

For example, a Load Range E Michelin Defender LTX tire can carry 3,195 lbs per tire. This means that you can put up to 12,780 pounds on all four tires without worrying about losing performance or damaging the rubber.

Do your math before purchasing tires – driving with a large trailer attached and lower load range tires might be dangerous.

2. Highway All-Season Tires are the Best Choice for the Average Dodge RAM 2500 Owner

While the RAM 2500 is certainly capable of tackling off-road surfaces, most owners drive it exclusively on the street. If you are one of them, we strongly recommend purchasing highway tires. These models are specifically designed to give you secure and reliable traction and braking on the road.

They are also available in higher load ranges, which makes them an excellent option for towing or hauling heavy trailers and cargo. Almost every modern highway truck tire is available in LT-metric sizes, perfect for the Dodge RAM 2500.

The biggest advantage of highway tires, though, is the price. Compared to any other tire type, highway tires are cheaper to buy. This is very important on heavy-duty trucks with large tires, which are expensive to begin with.

Furthermore, highway tires are also very durable – they are designed to have outstanding treadlife. The best highway all-season tires today come with 70,000-mile treadwear warranties, which means that you won’t be replacing them in a long time. This also means that highway tires are both cheaper to buy and more cost-effective in the long run.

But, what about the driving experience? Well, if you mostly drive on the street and highway, these are the best choice out there. Highway tires have excellent traction on dry and wet surfaces, even on the 6.7-liter turbodiesel engine of the RAM 2500, which can spin the wheels like crazy.

Moreover, highway tires also provide the driver with ample stopping power, even with a large trailer attached or a lot of cargo in the bed. High-speed stability is also very strong, and there is enough grip in the corners for faster driving through the bends.

Considering the fact that most highway tires have an all-season tread compound, they should work pretty well throughout the year.

Interestingly, even though many people consider them only as street models, highway tires can be surprisingly useful on dirt and gravel. Sure, they don’t offer the same traction and grip as off-road-focused tires but are still good enough if you drive more carefully.

More importantly, highway tires are made of stiff and durable rubber, often cut- and -chip-resistant, which means that they don’t get easily damaged. Still, if you often encounter mud or rocks, highway tires won’t provide the desired traction.

Finally, highway tires will provide passengers with the most comfortable and quiet ride. The large Dodge RAM 2500 tires are already louder than their passenger alternatives, but highway models are the smallest offenders.

3. All-Terrain Tires Offer Excellent Off-Road and On-Road Combo

As their name suggests, all-terrain tires are designed to be used on every type of surface. This means that they should work equally well on the road and out of it.

Thanks to that, all-terrain tires are an excellent choice for truckers that use their Dodge RAM 2500’s on demanding off-road terrains, but also want a safe and reliable choice for highway driving.

All-terrain tires are recognizable by their more aggressive tread design. Some truckers even choose all-terrain tires precisely because they look more aggressive and muscular.

When it comes to off-roading, all-terrain tires should give you reliable traction on most surfaces. They work very well on dirt and gravel roads, and pretty well on rocky surfaces and mud. All-terrain tires are an excellent option for sand driving as well.

The best thing about all-terrain tires is that they are very tough and durable. Most models have puncture-resistant and tear-resistant casings, which means that they can survive even the toughest terrains.

When it comes to treadlife, they aren’t as good as highway tires, but still very good. Some modern all-terrain tires come with 60,000-mile treadwear warranties, which is an excellent result.

All-terrain tires are also pretty good on paved roads. They won’t give you the same performance as highway tires for sure, but most drivers will be hard-pressed to notice the difference.

The best premium all-terrain tires have ample traction on the street, good grip, and strong braking. They work very well in heavy rain – the aggressive tread pattern gives them excellent hydroplaning resistance. However, they aren’t the best choice for light rain and damp surfaces.

That said, while all-terrain tires offer smooth ride quality, they can be noisy on the highway. Not as noisy as other off-road tires, but louder than highway tires for sure.

4. Mud-Terrain Tires and Maximum Traction Off-Road Tires are the Best Choices for Off-Roading

If you’re very serious about off-road driving, then we recommend going for mud-terrain and maximum traction off-road tires. These models have very aggressive tread patterns with deep grooves that give them outstanding off-road traction.

Between the two, mud-terrain tires are the best choice for driving in mud, but still excellent for other surfaces. Maximum traction off-road tires, on the other hand, work very well on every type of surface. For most drivers, though, the difference between the two will be negligible.

That said, these tires don’t offer the same performance on the road. Grip, traction, and braking will be worse, and there is much more noise on the highway. You will also experience increased fuel consumption and decreased performance.

Finally, some off-road focused tires don’t come with any treadwear warranty. They also have a slightly shorter treadlife and are more expensive to buy in the first place.

5. What About the Climate?

The temperature outside plays a big role in how the tires behave. If the temperature is too low, the tread compound becomes too hard and brittle, which translates into a loss of traction and grip, especially on wet surfaces. Furthermore, the tires might even get damaged while driving.

If the temperature is too high, the rubber compound becomes too soft, and the tires become unresponsive. High-speed stability is also much worse, and there is a loss of traction and grip. Moreover, the tires will wear faster than usual.

To mitigate these things, manufacturers started employing tread compounds that work equally well in colder and warmer temperatures. These tires are called all-season, and they are the most prevalent type of tires for trucks.

All-season tires provide the driver with very good performance on dry and wet roads, regardless of the temperature. Some of them also work on light snow. However, even the best all-season tires aren’t the most reliable choice for harsh wintry conditions.

If you live in areas with freezing temperatures and a lot of snow in the winter, you will need winter tires. These tires are specifically designed for cold weather, snow, and ice. They will provide you with safe and reliable traction and braking in wintry conditions, including driving over snow, slush, and ice. That’s why we included a set of winter tires on the list.

Summer tires, on the other hand, provide absolutely the best performance in warmer conditions, both over dry and wet surfaces. However, not many truck tires with a summer compound are available today. On top of that, all-season tires provide the driver with enough performance for street driving – trucks aren’t sports cars.

Final Thoughts

We curated the list to contain only high-quality tires that will give you a safe and reliable driving experience. There are no cheap tires there simply because they aren’t safe to drive, especially on wet roads. For a completely safe drive, we strongly recommend going for tires from reputable and well-known manufacturers.

    • Yep, ripped off big time on these tires. BFG didn’t even stand behind them. I maybe got 20,000 miles out of of these tires on my 2008 Cummins. I even had a set on my other vehicle. They are bald and now. Absolute trash.
