Welcome to my review of the Hankook Dynapro HP2. There are many tires that can perform well in both off-road and on-road scenarios. But if your crossover or SUV is mostly driven in city streets and smooth highways, you don’t need a set of rugged tires. What you need is the Hankook Dynapro HP2.
This is the type of tire designed to elevate the smooth comfort, highway silence, and all-season performance of your SUV. The Hankook Dynapro HP2 is also a more affordable alternative to premium SUV tires from Bridgestone, Goodyear, and Michelin.
But Hankook didn’t just go and made a cheap tire. They wanted something that offered excellent wet and dry performance, excellent mileage, good comfort, and little to no road noise. If you anything about tires, infusing all those merits is serious challenge. But Hankook was able to pull it off with the Dynapro HP2.
What type of car will benefit the most from the Hankook Dynapro HP2?
The Hankook Dynapro is primarily conceived for sport-utility vehicles, light pickup trucks, and even small crossovers. This is the perfect tire for the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Volkswagen Amarok, Toyota Hi-Lux, BMW X3, and many more. This tire is also ideal for rugged vehicles such as the Jeep Wrangler and Ford F-150.
It is available in a wide array of sizes and fitments for both import and domestic vehicles. The Hankook Dynapro HP2 is sold in 16” to 20” diameters. It is also one of the most affordable choices in the segment.
Hankook Dynapro HP2 Review: Can it go over rocky terrain?
Not exactly. If you want a tire for off-road driving, you’re barking at the wrong tree. The Hankook Dynapro HP2 is an all-season touring tire. This means it performs best over tarmac or smooth highways, particularly over wet and slippery roads.
The Hankook Dynapro HP2 is equipped with straight 4-channel waterways to resist aquaplaning and hydroplaning. It also comes with a high-stiffness center rib to offer precise steering and better high-speed stability. The inner and outer shoulders of the tires are designed with silencer sipes that cancels out harmonic pattern sounds as the tire rolls over the pavement. This gives the tire a smooth and quiet ride.
But since the Hankook Dynapro HP2 is constructed with wider twin steel belts, a high density polyester carcass, and an extra-strong single strand bead wire, it can handle big and heavy loads without sacrificing traction and durability.
However, even though the Hankook Dynapro HP2 is meant for normal roads, it can handle a bit of loose gravel and sand, but not by much. For extremely rugged or rocky terrain, you’ll need to upgrade to a chunkier set of all-terrain or A/t tires.
Is the tire good on snowy roads?
Yes, but I’m only talking about very light snow and ice here. If the roads are literally covered with inches of snow, the tire might have a difficult time to grip the icy surface. For that, you can go for snow tires or a rugged set of A/T tires for deep snow.
But for wet or slushy roads, the aqua slant sipes and grooves will lock together to provide more traction and rigidity. The lateral grooves are also designed to bite the surface when the going gets tough.
Will the tire improve the handling in my SUV?
Yes, but only to a certain point. Even though the Hankook Dynapro HP2 is a performance touring tire, it is not exactly designed to be a hardcore sporty tire. If you have a fast SUV with a large or turbocharged motor such as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio or the Infiniti QX50, the Hankook Dynapro HP2 will have a hard time to keep up with abrupt steering and throttle inputs.
This tire can help your SUV or truck to corner better, but only if you’re not attacking the bend in maximum attack mode! For this type of sporty driving, upgrading to a stickier set of ultra-high performance all-season tires is the best option.
The primary consideration in choosing the Hankook Dynapro HP2 are the ride comfort, silence, and all-weather capabilities. This is not the tire to buy if you drive your SUV like you’re on the racetrack.
How about comfort and road noise?
Since the Hankook Dynapro HP2 is an all-season touring tire, you can expect the comfort and noise levels to be comparable to other expensive tires. In fact, tire roar is only present at higher-than-average speeds, and that’s saying a lot for an SUV tire.
But comfort is the best trait of the Hankook Dynapro HP2. When the roads are smooth, the low-rolling resistance silica-enriched tread compound offers a smooth and well-rounded ride. It’s a different story as the tire rolls over bumpy pavement. It never loses composure when driving over pockmarked roads, but larger bumps or rough concrete will be felt if you’re traveling fast.
What is the wear characteristic of the Hankook Dynapro HP2?
The tread wear is slightly above average. Touring tires are known for their longevity and excellent wear characteristics. Fortunately, the same can be said for the Hankook Dynapro HP2. It is engineered to provide thousands of miles of smooth, comfortable, and silent driving.
But if you regularly drive your SUV over loose gravel or unpaved terrain, the tires may not last as long as you think. This also goes true if the vehicle is constantly encumbered with heavy loads. But if you drive sanely, the Hankook Dynapro HP2 is expected to give you many trouble-free miles ahead.

Should I choose the Hankook Dynapro HP2 for my truck or SUV?
A better question should be why not? It ticks all the right boxes for wet handling, dry performance, rolling silence, and road comfort. The Hankook Dynapro HP2 is also a solid budget alternative if you’re strapped for cash. Granted that SUV tires are most costly than tires for sedans or sport coupes, it’s safe to say you won’t lose an arm and a leg if you choose the Hankook Dynapro HP2!
